History of the Shortridge Company Ltd
The Shortridge Company Ltd is a new company with a long history. The company's president, John F. Nordlie, is also the president of the J. F. Nordlie Company Pipe Organ Builders. During Nordlie's first twenty three years of business, John and other shop craftsmen often made furniture as a supplement to organ building.
Building furniture was a somewhat natural turn of events for the J. F. Nordlie Company, considering John's father and both grandfathers were furniture builders and teachers of the craft.
In January of 2000, in order to develop the furniture line even further, John formed a corporation with his brother, Paul Nordlie; sister, Beth Nordlie MacDonald; and cousin, Gail (Hank) J. Hight. They named the new company the Shortridge Company Ltd., in honor of the Nordlies' maternal grandfather, William F. Shortridge.
The Shortridge Company furniture follows Craftsman design ideals with a contemporary appeal. The pieces are built of American hardwoods, leather and stone. They feature traditional hand rubbed finishes. Their simple design makes use of honest joinery (i.e. through tenons, pegged joints and book matched panels), e xquisite proportions and the natural beauty of the materials as ornamentation.
In 2002, the Shortridge Company Ltd. began building Craftsman style children's furniture and children's furniture kits. At the moment, only the Child's Rocker is available as a kit. Eventually all the children's furniture will be available for the home crafter in kit form. Please watch this web site for further developments.
